Marsala salt pans

Marsala is a land full of natural and architectural beauty, home of wine and salt. In the stretch of road that goes from the city of Trapani to Marsala, there are the Saline dello Stagnone, inside the Stagnone Nature Reserve. To visit them, we recommend a splendid Saline di Marsala excursion, a sight for the heart, mind and eyes.

Pink pools of water, white mounds that shine in the sun and windmills, a corner of western Sicily that cannot be missed.

Salt has always been an indispensable good for the whole of humanity, so much so that it was known by the ancient Romans as "white gold", becoming fundamental in the economic and social relations between the different cultures and the many countries of the world.

The history of this prime resource lays the foundations since the Neolithic era, in which hunters, farmers and ranchers began to feel the need to protect and preserve food even for long periods, and it is precisely in this way that salt was used: humanity's first "refrigerator".

Subsequently, in Roman times, the demand and use of salt increased, making it necessary to improve its production and obviously trade as well, giving rise to new communication routes, one of which is the famous Via Salaria. From that moment, salt became an excellent bargaining chip and a real tool of power.

Today these stories almost seem like legends, but this is precisely the story of salt, and you can fully learn about it during your Saline di Marsala excursion.

What to visit at the Marsala Salt Pans

Objectively, all it takes is the sight of a wonderful sunset at the Marsala salt pans to feel at peace. However, this picturesque location offers more to see during your excursion.

First of all we recommend a visit to the Windmill, today the symbol of the city of Marsala and of all our beloved Western Sicily. The mill that you will see has been restored into operation, renovated both from a structural point of view, making it a visually authentic mill of the past, as well as mechanical, with the possibility of seeing it in operation in the months of July, August and September during which it is operated twice a week.

After this visit you can go into the wonderful salt pans, walking through the salt dunes. From June until September, you can closely observe the crystallization of salt, and participate in the harvest. A truly unforgettable experience.

We advise you to reach Isola Lunga, a spectacle of nature where you can walk and admire one of the most amazing sunsets in the whole world.

When to visit Marsala Salt Pans?

At any time of the year you decide to visit the salt pans, the experience will touch you.

To add some spice to your holiday and make it fun and constructive, we recommend that you visit them between the end of July and the beginning of September. During this period, the Marsala Salt Pans allow visitors to become salt workers for a day, taking part in the salt harvest.

The excursion to the Marsala Salt Pans has a cost starting from 60,00 €
